YouTube Shorts hashtags, titles and descriptions: what actually helps

Hashtags will not rescue a weak Short, but the wrong ones can hide a good one. Here is what YouTube's own rules say about hashtags, titles, descriptions and Shorts thumbnails, and a simple routine for every upload.

YouTube Shorts hashtags are clickable labels like #history or #funfacts that you add to a Short's title or description. They help YouTube and viewers understand what the video is about, and they link to a page of other videos with the same tag. Use two or three that describe the video. More is not better, and the wrong ones can get a video removed.

This guide covers hashtags first, then the title, the description and the thumbnail, since they all work together.

How many hashtags should you use on a Short?

YouTube's hashtag help page sets one hard limit: "If a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, we'll ignore each hashtag on that content." Cross 60 and none of them count.

Below that, the same page warns: "Don't add too many tags in a single video." Each extra hashtag says less about the video. A good default for Shorts:

  • One topic hashtag that names the subject: #octopus, #ancientrome, #truecrime.
  • One niche hashtag that names the kind of video: #funfacts, #history, #scarystories.
  • Optionally one series hashtag you use on every video in a series, so viewers can find the rest.

You do not need #shorts. YouTube decides a video is a Short from its shape and length, not from a hashtag. Our guide to YouTube Shorts size has those rules.

Hashtags in title or description?

Both work. YouTube says you can add hashtags to "a title and description" when you upload a video or record a Short, and "Hashtags in the title and description will link to a results page featuring other videos sharing the hashtag."

The practical difference:

PlacementGood forWatch out for
TitleOne hashtag that is part of the topicTakes space from the words people read
DescriptionTwo or three topic hashtagsNone, this is the usual place

YouTube also says "up to three hashtags that are considered most engaging will appear by your video title," taken from those you add. So you do not have to put them in the title to have them shown near it.

When you add text to a Short in the YouTube app and start typing a hashtag, YouTube suggests relevant ones based on signals like your past uploads. Those suggestions are a good starting point.

Hashtags that can hurt

The same help page is direct about this: "Don't add hashtags that are not directly related to the video" and "Misleading or unrelated hashtags may result in the removal of your video."

Avoid:

  • Trending tags that have nothing to do with the video. A fun facts Short tagged with a celebrity's name is the classic example.
  • Copy and paste blocks of 30 tags. They push you toward the 60 limit and say nothing specific.
  • Hashtags that promise something the video does not have, such as #giveaway on a video with no giveaway.

How to write a YouTube Shorts title

YouTube's recommendations page says search results are ranked on "relevance, engagement and quality." Most Shorts views come from swiping rather than search, but a clear title still helps on search, your channel page and the related videos list.

The hard limit is 100 characters, the maximum the YouTube Data API accepts for a title. In the feed, long titles can be cut off well before that, so put the important words first.

A good Shorts title:

  1. Names the subject in plain words people would search: "Why octopuses have three hearts", not "You won't believe this!!!"
  2. Adds the hook in a few words: "Why octopuses have three hearts (and blue blood)".
  3. Stays honest. If the title promises a twist, the Short has one.

Write the title after the video is made, not before, so it matches what the viewer sees in the first second. Our list of video hooks works for titles too.

What to put in a Shorts description

The description can be long, up to 5,000 bytes according to the Data API reference, but few people read it on a Short. Keep it short and useful:

  • One or two sentences saying what the video covers, using the words someone would search.
  • A source line if the Short states a fact, date or number.
  • Your two or three hashtags at the end.
  • A pointer to a related video or playlist if you have a series.

Do tags still matter?

Tags (the hidden keywords in the upload form) are different from hashtags. YouTube's tags help page says the title, thumbnail and description "are more important pieces of metadata for your video's discovery," and that tags "can be useful if the content of your video is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role." Add a misspelling or two if your subject is often misspelled, and skip the rest.

Shorts thumbnails, briefly

On Shorts, the first frame does most of the work, because the feed plays the video on its own. A creator interviewed on the YouTube Blog said thumbnails are not important for discovery since in their experience "99.9% of the views are coming from the Shorts feed," while adding that thumbnails matter for how a channel looks. They show on your channel page and in search. YouTube's July 24, 2026 update says you can pick any frame in the YouTube mobile app, choose from three suggested frames on desktop, and that Partner Program creators can upload a custom Shorts thumbnail. Pick a frame where the subject is large and clear.

A two minute routine for every upload

  1. Title: subject first, hook second, under about 50 characters.
  2. Description: one sentence, sources if any, then hashtags.
  3. Hashtags: topic, niche, and series if you have one. Three at most.
  4. Thumbnail frame: the clearest frame of the subject.
  5. Check: nothing in the title or tags that the video does not deliver.

If a Short still stalls, the cause is rarely the metadata. See why YouTube Shorts are not getting views and how to go viral on YouTube Shorts.

Where FacelessHype fits

FacelessHype makes the video: the script, the voice, the pictures and the captions, from one idea. You download the MP4 and add the title, description and hashtags yourself when you upload or schedule it in YouTube Studio. Because each video starts from a specific topic, like the history or fun facts formats, the right hashtags are usually obvious. Pick a niche on the formats page to get started.

Quick answers

Should I use #shorts on YouTube Shorts? It is not needed. YouTube treats a video as a Short based on its aspect ratio and length.

How many hashtags for YouTube Shorts? Two or three relevant ones. Over 60, YouTube ignores all of them.

Do hashtags help YouTube Shorts get views? A little, by making the topic clear and linking to hashtag pages. The opening second and whether people keep watching matter far more.

Can I change hashtags after posting? Yes. Edit the title or description in YouTube Studio at any time.
