How to make Reddit story videos that are yours to post
Reddit story videos are one of the easiest faceless formats to start, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here is how to make them step by step, and why the story should be your own instead of someone else's post.

To make Reddit story videos, you need four things: a story told in the first person, a narrator voice, a background that keeps the eyes busy, and big captions. That is the whole format. The part most people skip is the most important one: where the story comes from.
This guide covers how to make a Reddit story video from start to finish, what to put behind the voice, how long it should be, and how to keep the channel safe from the rules that stop many of these channels from earning.
What a Reddit story video is
A Reddit story video is a short, first person story read aloud over moving footage. The stories copy the style of popular Reddit communities: "Am I the jerk" questions, revenge stories, confessions, workplace drama and roommate fights. A title card shows the question at the start, a narrator reads the story, and the captions follow every word.
It works because the hook is built in. "AITA for skipping my brother's wedding?" is a question the viewer wants to judge, so they stay to hear the rest.
Can you just read Reddit posts out loud?
This is the most common question about the format, and the honest answer is: it is a bad idea.
Reddit's User Agreement says that users "retain any ownership rights you have in Your Content". The license users grant goes to Reddit, not to anyone who wants to turn a post into a video. A post on Reddit is still someone else's writing.
The platforms push the same way. YouTube's monetization policies describe reused content as content repurposed from "another online source" without "significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value". The same page lists "scrolling text with minimal or no narrative" and "templated storylines" under inauthentic content. A channel that reads other people's posts word for word, over the same background every time, fits those descriptions closely.
TikTok's Community Guidelines say "You should only post content you created or have the right to share", and that content is not eligible for the For You feed if it "includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new".
The fix is simple: write original stories in the Reddit style. The format is not owned by anyone. The individual posts are.
How to make a Reddit story video, step by step
- Pick a story type. AITA, revenge, confession, roommate, family drama, workplace. Stay with one or two types so viewers know what your channel is.
- Write the title card first. One question or one strange fact, under ten words. "AITA for charging my sister rent for my couch?"
- Write the story in the first person. Short sentences, past tense, one clear conflict, one turn. Keep names out or use plain first names.
- End on a line that starts the comments. Leave the judgment to the viewer: "So, am I the jerk?" works because people want to answer.
- Pick a narrator voice. A natural, slightly casual voice fits better than a dramatic one. These are meant to sound like someone telling you a story.
- Pick the background. See the options below.
- Add captions. Big, bold, a few words at a time, placed clear of the app buttons. Many people watch on mute.
- Watch it once on your phone before you post. If you lose interest in the middle, cut that part.

What to put behind the story
The background has one job: keep the eyes busy while the ears follow the story. The common choices:
| Background | Why it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Satisfying loops (slime, sand, ink, soap cutting) | Calm, endless, never distracts from the words | Use footage you made or have rights to |
| Game style footage | Familiar to younger viewers | Recorded gameplay from someone else's video is reused content |
| Scenes made for the story | Every line has a matching picture, so it feels like a mini film | Takes longer by hand |
| Plain text on a color | Cheap to make | Close to "scrolling text", which YouTube names as inauthentic |
The safest choice is footage you own or scenes made for that exact story. Clips cut from someone else's video, even a few seconds, are the kind of reuse the policies describe.
How long should a Reddit story video be?
Shorter than most people think. A story with one conflict and one turn rarely needs more than a minute or so. Read your script out loud with a timer, then cut every sentence that does not move the story. YouTube now allows Shorts up to three minutes, but a longer story has to earn every extra second.
On TikTok there is a reason to go longer: the Creator Rewards Program only pays for videos longer than one minute. If you post the same story on both apps, a cut just over one minute can work for both. Our guide on how long a YouTube Short should be has the details.
Ideas for original Reddit style stories
Here are eight story ideas you could make today, all original, none taken from a real post:
- AITA for refusing to give back the birthday gift after she cancelled the party?
- My coworker kept "borrowing" my lunch, so I started bringing the spiciest soup I could find
- I found out my neighbour had been using my Wi-Fi for three years, and his router name gave him away
- AITA for telling my brother his new restaurant needs a better name?
- My landlord tried to keep my deposit over a nail hole, so I brought receipts
- I was the only person at my own surprise party who knew it was happening
- My sister read my diary at Thanksgiving, so I wrote a new one just for her
- AITA for leaving the group chat after they planned a trip without me?
Each one has the same skeleton: a clear wrong, a reaction, and a question the viewer wants to answer.
How to make Reddit story videos with AI
You can make every part by hand: write the story, record or generate the voice, cut background footage, and time captions in an editor. That works, but it is slow, and the slow part is repeated for every single video.
With AI, the steps shrink to the idea. In FacelessHype you type the idea, pick the Reddit stories format, and the app writes a new story in the Reddit style, records the narrator, makes the background and burns in the captions. The stories are written new from your idea, so you are not reading out someone else's post. You can edit any line before you post, and remake a single clip if one picture is off.
Reddit stories on TikTok versus YouTube Shorts
The format works on both, with small differences:
- TikTok rewards longer stories through the one minute rule, and series do well: "Part 2" in the title brings people to your profile.
- YouTube Shorts favours tight stories that people watch to the end and replay. The title card matters more because many viewers decide in the first second.
- Both need captions on screen, because many people scroll with the sound off.
If you plan to post the same video on both, read our guide to posting TikTok videos on YouTube Shorts first, and see YouTube Shorts vs TikTok for how each one pays. For a commercial look at making them for TikTok, see the TikTok video generator page.
Mistakes that sink Reddit story channels
- Reading real posts word for word. The biggest risk to the channel, for the reasons above.
- The same background on every video. It makes the channel look templated. Rotate looks, or make scenes for each story.
- Real names and places. Keep people unidentifiable. A story about a real, named person can turn into harassment fast.
- A flat ending. If the story just stops, nobody comments. End on the question.
- Robotic narration. A voice that mispronounces names or reads in one tone loses people halfway.
Quick answers
Is it legal to make Reddit story videos? The format is fine. Reading someone else's post word for word is the risky part, because the writer keeps the rights to their post. Write original stories in the same style.
Do Reddit story videos still get views? Yes, the format is still popular on TikTok and Shorts. Views depend on the story and the first second, not on the format alone.
What voice do Reddit story videos use? Most use a text to speech or AI narrator. A natural, conversational voice works better than a dramatic one.
Can Reddit story channels be monetized? They can, if the content is original and follows each platform's rules. Channels that reuse posts and footage are the ones that get rejected. See can you monetize AI videos on YouTube.
